  1. I recently read a book about late Medieval hisotry. Did you know the so-called peasant revolts were carried out by farmers and the middle class?

  2. The datails that grab our attention are thefour crosses, the fact that there are two feet sticking out of the bottom of the design and there is also two hands sticking out the side . At the top there seems to be something resemblig a head. There is also the fact that he has a bookin one hand and a rod in the other. All these details make you come to the conclusion that st. john was a religous person.

  3. As a Christian believer the figure of St John means more than meets the eye. He is looked up to as believer of God and I am a believer of God myself. Also by the Halo or ring behind his head attracts me because it shows he was a Holy man. The book of Kells he is holding also resembles a bible that we study now.

  4. The figure on p. 20 shows a higher authority holding a book. The reason that it catches our attention is because it symbolizes how the church became the center of all things that had to do with literature. This shows how they viewed the church officials. This is very important in helping us to understand their culture.

  5. He holds a pen/quill in his left hand and a book in the other. The pen and book grab our attention because he is holding them. By his right foot under his pen (presumably he is right-handed) is the inkhorn for his pen since it cannot be a chair foot because there isn't one symmetrically on the other side. His book is closed, possibly signifying that his book is complete. This is important because he wrote the Gospel of John, one of four sections within the Book of Kells.

  6. The figure seems to be holding a book of sorts, almost as if he's offering it to us, the readers. He also seems to be surrounded by 4 crosses, in the standard Holy Roman Cross motion that catholics do across their body before prayer: Head, Torso, and each shoulder.

He also seems to be holding a limp spear. Of course it may be a pen as well, signifying that he penned the book he's offering to us.

  7. The thing that captured my attention the most is the many crosses that were surrounded by the man. It shows that he was really into his religon and he takes pride in it. Ut also showed that he was holding a pen. This could mean that he was a man of great intelligence and this signifies that he has an education. It shows that he is a man of great importance.

  8. One may say that the four crosses are details that truly grabs ones attention. The fact that there are two feet sticking out of the bottom of the design. At the top there seems to be something resembling a head. There is also a book in one hand and a rod in the other. With all these different symbols in this picture, one can concluded that St. John is a very religious man.
